Stanley 17. 1, a a in st A18-Palm Beach Post-Times, Saturday, August 18, 1979 Hijacking Thwarted By Unlikely Heroes Post Wire Services MIAMI The people who overpowered a knifewielding hijacker were an unlikely group of heroes: a paunchy pilot, a 150-pound vacationer, a middle-aged flight attendant and a pretty: stewardess. The FBI said 51-year-old pilot Roy Hensen, passenger Jim Westdendorf, gentlemanly looking senior flight attendant Ed Labelle and stewardess Kelly Mitchell all helped subdue a gaudily dressed former mental patient who attempted to divert Eastern flight 980 to Cuba. The plane was bound for Miami on a flight from Guatemala City.
Allah Roland Kagan, 24, of Holyoke, was charged with air piracy and arraigned yesterday. Magistrate Charlene Sorrentino set bond at $150,000. Kagan was held Thursday night in the psychiatric ward of Jackson Memorial Hospital, but was sent back to the Dade County Jail after his arraignment. The accused hijacker, who was overpowered by passengers and flight crewmen as the Eastern jet was in its final approach to the Varadaro, Cuba, airport Thursday night, was ordered to appear at a preliminary hearing on air piracy charges Aug. 27.
U.S. marshals said Kagan will be jailed at the South Florida Federal Correctional Institution. He told Hansen, who had tried to dissuade him from the hijacking: "If I go to prison, I'll get three square a day it's better than I'm doing now. Kagan had been hospitalized for 10 days in July in Northhampton, State Hospital after he had been arrested on an assault charge. His hospital stay apparently replaced a jail sentence.
Hansen said the hijacking began just minutes after takeoff from Guatemala when Kagan told LaBelle, 58, "he had a bomb and would blow the airplane up unless was taken to Cuba." Kagan said the bomb was in his radio, but Hansen noticed that several times Kagan took his finger off the "bomb trigger" and he decided it was a hoax. He returned to the flight deck. Kagan later pulled out a pocket knife and threatened Ms. Mitchell, 28, and moved to the first class section. She said she tried to "keep him calm and get him sidetracked." Hansen returned to talk with Kagan.
When "he started to pull his arm away from the stewardess," Hansen grabbed both his wrists and LaBelle and several passengers jumped into the fray. Hansen wrested a knife from the hijacker as Westendorf nearly choked the man with a half-nelson around his neck. Labelle helped hold the man down along with Ms. Mitchell and another man who declined to talk to reporters. "When he (Hansen) grabbed him down low, I grabbed him up high and put a half-nelson on him," Westendorf said.
"I knew damn good and well when I had him around there we were going to get to Miami." Crew members told Westendorf, also an Eastern employee, to free the hijacker's throat from the wrestling hold. A member of St. George's Episcopal Church, Mrs. Hale taught Sunday School, chaired Church Periodicals served as Episcopal Church Womens Treasurer for many years, With the help of other women of the Parish, she organized and established the First Public Library in Riviera Beach, serving as treasurer of Church Women United.
Mrs. Hale was also long time knitting chairman for the Seaman's Church Institute. She was involved in the Administrative area fund raising for the complete furnishing of the rebuilt Bishop Gray Inn. (An Episcopal Home) in Davenport, Florida. Other active memberships included, D.A.R., Eastern Star Sweet Adelines.
Mrs. Hale is survived by two nephews, Richard Heinz, Canaan, Connecticut, William Heinz, Hartford, Connecticut niece, Linda Hardy, Salisbury, New Jersey many many friends.
